Painting them has been a form of self care for me. I don't have any notes to address, I don't have to make them look realistic, I can paint them however I please. </p><p style="text-align: center;">I really enjoy taking a break from digital work and using real paint. There are some things that are a little more rewarding when working with real paint. It's easier to get certain textures, and variations in color. There's no undo button and many times you have to work with whatever mistakes you have made. </p><p style="text-align: center;">It's also nice being able to hold a painting in your hand. It doesn't live on a screen or requires to be printed to be enjoyed. </p><p style="text-align: center;">If I could, I would paint more often. The days and weeks are filled with so many tasks though. It makes the time that I do get to paint feel very rewarding though. </p>Erenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16862334846975368403noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14531355.post-36055834843408079602022-04-28T07:59:00.001-07:002022-04-28T07:59:45.180-07:00happy thorsday<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcf3Gw5iWFv9-taCcC2rrIxi2NTKYMS3VOQpcqDB7vX8PDV1jhGCl_TcAQDT1wr1GLgViE8jX1KmrBHtUj7oQ-JZR9mhRWC51hzpSt5fgntCTlGR-VdkM29eVB5vCL0DRUV5_qc7PS0k1nBF1koYMh1zz8czkGF82HpceCt9aekdVGe4aR37s/s3000/thor%20copy.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="2910" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcf3Gw5iWFv9-taCcC2rrIxi2NTKYMS3VOQpcqDB7vX8PDV1jhGCl_TcAQDT1wr1GLgViE8jX1KmrBHtUj7oQ-JZR9mhRWC51hzpSt5fgntCTlGR-VdkM29eVB5vCL0DRUV5_qc7PS0k1nBF1koYMh1zz8czkGF82HpceCt9aekdVGe4aR37s/w388-h400/thor%20copy.jpg" width="388" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Forgot to post this last Thursday! I've been very hesitant in the past because I don't know much about plants or how to take care of them. I've been inspired by people sharing pics on Twitter and Instagram of their indoor spaces with lots of beautiful plants. Because of the pandemic, I'm at home a lot more and I wanted our space to have some of the beautiful green that's outside, inside. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj9ZMFe0r5LlWzcc5Xu18Ked3jznBYTJSrhG881MXnoqdBrN4JmFy0i_JvQUuczruxAZ6-1Z5sCBm_elJHBOQ8J_ufGTQphGn-dRxA23UbTdlGpehKEzPa5L2SNO5RXCflsXEz9D6AJFTWs6zZO_HMWBgP5mZg_3cj4VQH4WARM6yb97n0aex0=s3608" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3608" data-original-width="2706" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj9ZMFe0r5LlWzcc5Xu18Ked3jznBYTJSrhG881MXnoqdBrN4JmFy0i_JvQUuczruxAZ6-1Z5sCBm_elJHBOQ8J_ufGTQphGn-dRxA23UbTdlGpehKEzPa5L2SNO5RXCflsXEz9D6AJFTWs6zZO_HMWBgP5mZg_3cj4VQH4WARM6yb97n0aex0=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;">One of my other goals for this year is to paint more! I have a nice painting desk but for this one, I sat on the floor so I could get the nice sunlight that floods our living room in the afternoon. A few minutes into this painting and I wanted to start over because I didn't like the color I chose for the plant's pot. As I mentioned before though, gouache is very forgiving and I was able to mix in a few colors and got the color I wanted. I hope to do more paintings of my plants. It's nice to paint just for fun, and if I mess up I just keep going and it can look however I want it to, because I'm the art director and I have no notes! </p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p>Erenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16862334846975368403noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14531355.post-66076876206251032882022-03-04T07:22:00.000-08:002022-03-04T07:22:10.585-08:00abbott elementary<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgk8rXj4kEwR558tEm57DhDs9F_hQFhwPrT6wZofJJmG3CNJ8_Y15SdJ5y36S-0NxK1eTNOGAgxFX8n-ITwgULnPl9diQ1ZewyYHIXkwRyLhf1OkiQqEfzbzOh-R_Qipw90XKuZ-2lwpZhVDILd7HLPSBxUtw_H928hlhFAMlfOdrnedKhDl1o=s3000" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgk8rXj4kEwR558tEm57DhDs9F_hQFhwPrT6wZofJJmG3CNJ8_Y15SdJ5y36S-0NxK1eTNOGAgxFX8n-ITwgULnPl9diQ1ZewyYHIXkwRyLhf1OkiQqEfzbzOh-R_Qipw90XKuZ-2lwpZhVDILd7HLPSBxUtw_H928hlhFAMlfOdrnedKhDl1o=w400-h320" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's a little Abbot Elementary fan art. It's a fun way to get to know other artists. I looked back at some of the MTA's I've done before and they were all before the pandemic. It was interesting to see what my likes and dislikes were before. For example,"Parking in LA" was a dislike of mine but I don't have to park anywhere much these days because I'm mostly home. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Some things never change though! Sometimes figuring out the colors for a spread can be difficult. There has to be a good balance of warm and cool colors. The story drives the choice of colors of course, and for this book all the pages are fun and vibrant. I change my mind about colors a lot as I'm working on a spread. The rug in the photo above for example, was probably pink, yellow, purple, or blue at some point. I change the colors until everything feels right and balanced. It's challenging, but when it all comes together it's a great feeling! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I'm so happy I got to work on this book, it's one of my favorites! </div><br /><br /><br />Erenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16862334846975368403noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14531355.post-58250743208010626472022-02-14T09:03:00.001-08:002022-02-14T19:25:19.818-08:00<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFnImQ6psSn2NpO6jl1Gi9kBltTgXknVBozC_MfagWYNPlaBn6QfoHNV-4iWVHorpFxYD7wPJOz78_yP4hsX9rgGCBKTgKMvPV1k8dno1h4E-EHHuGZq3k6wik9FoyCkC-8lWMdIFQG9ruuQH-YrWmpISnc88IubzeH9z4NXvRYDTce7ZvhEY" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3300" data-original-width="2700" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFnImQ6psSn2NpO6jl1Gi9kBltTgXknVBozC_MfagWYNPlaBn6QfoHNV-4iWVHorpFxYD7wPJOz78_yP4hsX9rgGCBKTgKMvPV1k8dno1h4E-EHHuGZq3k6wik9FoyCkC-8lWMdIFQG9ruuQH-YrWmpISnc88IubzeH9z4NXvRYDTce7ZvhEY=w327-h400" width="327" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Happy Valentine's Day! Here's my piece for the Little Golden Tales show at Nucleus! It's a tribute to Little Golden Books, Mary Blair, and Lord of the Rings all in one shot!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was so happy to have been invited to participate in this show. I love Golden Books! Working on this piece was so great because I was able to paint it traditionally, and had creative freedom to choose whatever I wanted. I chose Lord of the Rings because I've always wanted to do a piece based on the books/films. I also chose to pay tribute to Mary Blair's cover for "I Can Fly" as it is my all time favorite Little Golden Book. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Here's another Doctor Who piece! This one is for <a href="http://silverscreensociety.com/" target="_blank">Silver Screen Society</a> and it's based on the 1965 film, "Dr. Who and the Daleks." Thinking about doing more of these Doctor Who children's book type illustrations along with the travel posters I'm currently working on. </div>

A few people have recently asked about my process for my latest illustration. So here we go. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started off by watching a couple of Doctor Who episodes. It's SO important to do research. :) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRWVEle0X8osK5jDI-FLRwS40HRRQmRCj_jwhGXb6fEJSiTsUUcC3lc4c-HVxG24_c1Vbbw5jEl_t-T70Dj474snrV5Ph9TfbG6ued4PHM-JP36Az0Ru3FbWSUZuZOYrhjsL-Y-Q/s1600/image-1024x682.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRWVEle0X8osK5jDI-FLRwS40HRRQmRCj_jwhGXb6fEJSiTsUUcC3lc4c-HVxG24_c1Vbbw5jEl_t-T70Dj474snrV5Ph9TfbG6ued4PHM-JP36Az0Ru3FbWSUZuZOYrhjsL-Y-Q/s320/image-1024x682.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I first had an idea to do a fake cover for a children's magazine. I was inspired by this image:<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEShePlQEYh1xEwb9UmeNoYVa0ATDMxcuiojDB2rDZokRT4QVMhEyrbxotL3BV6-yo8tBrAnJeSQu2d70Sd0dPwm70pvD0W0dPf0b_acPdqkKu5Wp7wsvOrq_rJugpIhX_upfW-A/s1600/4e1f1a6b7b1ad52d45486a26bd16f109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEShePlQEYh1xEwb9UmeNoYVa0ATDMxcuiojDB2rDZokRT4QVMhEyrbxotL3BV6-yo8tBrAnJeSQu2d70Sd0dPwm70pvD0W0dPf0b_acPdqkKu5Wp7wsvOrq_rJugpIhX_upfW-A/s320/4e1f1a6b7b1ad52d45486a26bd16f109.jpg" width="254" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also had an idea of making a fake children's book cover. After sketching out my ideas, they just weren't working. Then, the idea of a travel poster sounded a lot more appropriate. So many choices for destinations! And the "airline" would be the TARDIS. I looked up vintage travel posters for inspiration. I also made a Pinterest board with some of my favorites: <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/erenunten/ads-posters/" target="_blank">http://www.pinterest.com/erenunten/ads-posters/</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Below is the thumbnail sketch for my poster idea. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixpBvjk4YuEfRovdKRpTMhumXNOgdPuq4fb36w0kuFXL6u4upYujYKiE-2EnhG3Zp4xA4D3FA4YXVKlZ7n6T21nRo_ebkRXTCZlazzvc5Dq3dc8_COrHeDj4WsNIOYvSZPoUAniQ/s1600/dw_sketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixpBvjk4YuEfRovdKRpTMhumXNOgdPuq4fb36w0kuFXL6u4upYujYKiE-2EnhG3Zp4xA4D3FA4YXVKlZ7n6T21nRo_ebkRXTCZlazzvc5Dq3dc8_COrHeDj4WsNIOYvSZPoUAniQ/s320/dw_sketch.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the bad drawing from my thumbnail. There's too much going on here. The composition was not working. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Nzoin4KcjnUu_VkkM-3ufNcfHcMrhunazPCybs5rEpzVdjRHhs528r7ODjiwo3Ua3abBAkb2eNZo6rfE7skTME8idaBaF2heZnOXCrhdt6UekDWjCwmiBdYThXVavYU3TmloMQ/s1600/dw_process1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Nzoin4KcjnUu_VkkM-3ufNcfHcMrhunazPCybs5rEpzVdjRHhs528r7ODjiwo3Ua3abBAkb2eNZo6rfE7skTME8idaBaF2heZnOXCrhdt6UekDWjCwmiBdYThXVavYU3TmloMQ/s320/dw_process1.jpg" width="242" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still decided to add color to see if it would help. It did not. I tried to use a limited color palette, but that idea quickly went out the door. This was the point where I hated what I was doing, and wanted to quit. But that's when you have to push further and problem solve. I decided to take a look at all those vintage travel posters I love to figure out what made them so great. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4RuvU5ydtHoQfsUWvfRJv1NC84xhlln2dSBgOsM7F0c5vvkGBsqcAVzePZKal034CEUrTopq9eRSmBaWAJFX62amePtiuy3jJBRqNbPrfnTLd618l42cBPFj3JL3vboKwTRVjBA/s1600/dw_process2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4RuvU5ydtHoQfsUWvfRJv1NC84xhlln2dSBgOsM7F0c5vvkGBsqcAVzePZKal034CEUrTopq9eRSmBaWAJFX62amePtiuy3jJBRqNbPrfnTLd618l42cBPFj3JL3vboKwTRVjBA/s320/dw_process2.jpg" width="242" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I needed to simplify things. I wanted the focus to be on the Doctor and Clara, so I made them bigger. There's still too much going on here though. Had to keep simplifying it. There's four main images and that doesn't make it a great composition. Also, the Doctor's sonic screwdriver can't really be seen. My husband will probably also want you to know that he pointed that out to me. He's an amazing artist, and he gives great feedback. :) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipazGyDFqWVnn4pxQ2ByXWUQDUUMERZkhs_OYfSENt7HR1n4dlHEvVa5i_M5ASVICLtSniY8b6mZTuGIOGV_2fOIbB4SoeXOwRYgsNNQGoSUt5T-0rMM75vzI3-UdSvz_bjH1PEA/s1600/dw_process3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipazGyDFqWVnn4pxQ2ByXWUQDUUMERZkhs_OYfSENt7HR1n4dlHEvVa5i_M5ASVICLtSniY8b6mZTuGIOGV_2fOIbB4SoeXOwRYgsNNQGoSUt5T-0rMM75vzI3-UdSvz_bjH1PEA/s320/dw_process3.jpg" width="230" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And below we have the final artwork. Simplified and a much better composition than before. Shifted things around a bit for better balance. Although I know all these "rules" for designing things, it can still be a challenge while creating something. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGleVkEFDQ48kBF8hvPStOJihvbpW83aDgorBQPLzxLuwn-ytBD-via9roZVWaJm7ucz7YtZt13I9KnC_e9eCjQBdJGmYSuIPSrRufL0MLo9P7W7QtTi3YW5WvNhyphenhyphenuT88TikgAOQ/s1600/akhaten_unten_web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGleVkEFDQ48kBF8hvPStOJihvbpW83aDgorBQPLzxLuwn-ytBD-via9roZVWaJm7ucz7YtZt13I9KnC_e9eCjQBdJGmYSuIPSrRufL0MLo9P7W7QtTi3YW5WvNhyphenhyphenuT88TikgAOQ/s320/akhaten_unten_web.jpg" width="231" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm excited to do more of these Doctor Who travel posters. There are a lot of Doctors, companions, and places to illustrate!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hope you enjoyed my process post! I'm not the best at explaining things, but I loved making this, and I hope that shows! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's my piece for the Doctor Who show at Meltdown Comics. I've been wanting to work on a Doctor Who illustration for a long time now, and I'm so thrilled to be a part of this exhibit!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The inspiration behind this piece came from my love of vintage travel posters. I'm planning on doing a series of these with different Doctors and companions. This one is from "The Rings of Akhaten" episode. While in the Tardis, the Doctor asks Clara what she would like to see, and she responds with "I'd like to see...something awesome!"<br />
<br />
Prints of this will be available in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/eren" target="_blank">shop</a>! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The conversation that led to this painting:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Husband (9:50pm): "Honey, can you do a small painting for an art fundraiser?"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Me: "Sure, when is the art due?"</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Husband: "Tomorrow."</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Me: "... ... Sure."</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Had to work on paper I'm not used to, but it was a nice little challenge. Didn't have time to scan the painting so please excuse the quality of the image. Doing this quick painting made me decide to do more of these small paintings as an exercise to get better with gouache. :)</div>

I've always loved Little Golden Books. As an artist, it was seriously a dream of mine to work on one. And now, the third Little Golden Book I illustrated was released today. Thank you, Nickelodeon and Random House! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The book is available on <a href="http://amzn.to/1bb4Nqz" target="_blank">Amazon</a> and bookstores as well!</div>

Here's my Wallace and Gromit piece for <a href="http://silverscreensociety.com/" target="_blank">Silver Screen Society</a>! I first saw "A Grand Day Out" in a geology class in college, and I totally loved it. I really love all the films, but this one is my favorite.</div>
